98: Celebrating Whimsical Collectibles and Engaging Your Online Customers with Misty Pate
“I’ve never known (a time when I didn’t go to) garage sales, thrift stores, and antique stores!”
Misty was born and raised in Anderson, IN. Her parents were antique dealers her entire life. She likes to say that she was raised in an antique mall. Her parent's best friends owned an antique mall in Anderson, IN and Misty spent a ton of time there as a child. She remembers looking through boxes in the basement for hours and loved seeing all the "old junk" that filled the boxes. She specifically remembers the old books and magazines and always thought of what life was like back in the "olden days." Misty’s parents exposed her to garage sales, auctions, thrift shops, antique stores, flea markets, and estate sales before she could walk.
Their furniture was secondhand, her clothes were secondhand, many of her toys were secondhand. It wasn't because they were "needy," it was just that they were at so many secondhand places, that it was too hard to turn down items that still had so much life still in them at such great prices. It was all just a normal way of life to Misty. She thought EVERYBODY lived this way.
To Misty, it was normal to have photos of strange people on the wall that her family had no idea who they were or where they came from. Instant relatives, her dad always said. She has always loved and appreciated vintage and antique items. She loves the life that the items used to have and she has always thought it would be great to get a peek into the past in their history. What a great superpower that would be!
